I’m broadly interested in the biogenesis and mechanics of chloroplasts, particularly how the action of mechanosensitive ion channels helps maintain chloroplast shape and the role this shape may play in chloroplastic processes, such as division. Green algae are a particularly interesting group for this, as some species maintain chloroplasts with funky shapes (e.g., the genus Spirogyra). Outside of the lab, I spend a ton of time running, hiking, and crocheting.

For opportunities see below.

Opportunities

Undergraduate students – Several projects are available for undergraduate students who are interested in plant cell mechanobiology and want to have wet lab research experience. Several work modalities are available. If you are interested feel free to contact me directly at iradin@umn.edu.

Graduate students – Positions are available! Prospective students should apply to the Plant and Microbial Biology (PMB) program. More information on the PMB program and application process can be found here. Prospective students are welcomed and encouraged to reach out to the labs they might be interested in before applying. If you are interested in my lab, feel free to contact me directly at iradin@umn.edu.
